Project Accomplishments

Handwashing Curriculum
A curriculum on handwashing for third graders has been developed for use in classrooms by teachers and volunteers trained to present the program. Handouts were developed in English and Spanish. These materials are now being used in over 18 states in order to ingrain handwashing into the lives of young people. Here, we can prevent infections before they even begin!

California Pharmacists Association Partnership to Reach Millions
CPhA and the CMA Foundation have partnered to bring antibiotic awareness to the public through pharmacists. In 2001, over 750 pharmacies distributed over 750,000 bag stuffers statewide. In 2002, this partnership expanded to include LA Care Health Plan. Over 1500 pharmacies in Los Angeles and statewide distributed over 1.5 million bag stuffers. And, with the partnership of LA Care, the bag stuffers distributed in Los Angeles County were written in 10 languages!

In 2003, we will again conduct our bag stuffer campaign during Antibiotic Awareness Week, and pharmacists will be available to give public presentations through AWARE's Speakers Bureau.

Coming Soon..
The AWARE Project is launching its Speakers Bureau in the fall, connecting health professionals with their communities through speaking engagements with PTA and Childcare organizations, service clubs, and other such groups. Contact Shannon Eldridge at seldridge@cmanet.org for more information on becoming or hosting a speaker.

The AWARE Project is spearheading a California initiative to begin the tracking of appropriate prescribing trends among physicians with leadership from the CMA Foundation, health plans, and the State Health Department. Resulting data will be used to support doctors in treating their patients with antibiotic infections and to educate on the wise use of antibiotics.
