Goal
4 - Expand the knowledge and understanding of how antibiotic
resistance and antibiotic use are impacted by culture,
ethnicity and economic status, especially in the Latino
community and among Medicaid recipients.
A breakout session entitled Medicaid and Underserved
Communities focused on emerging strategies and
unique interventions with underserved communities. The
breakout also discussed working with State Medicaid
offices and community clinics and the importance of
health literacy and cultural sensitivity in developing
messages in awareness and education campaigns.
On Sunday, a plenary session entitled Appropriate
Antibiotic Use in Ethnic Communities was held.
Alice Chen, MD, The California Endowment and Asian
Health Services moderated the panel that included
Rita Mangione-Smith, MD, UCLA, Joseph Clift, MD, Ethnic
Health Institute and Len Fong, Pacific News Service.
The panel shared recent research findings of how ethnicity
affects interest and the use of antibiotics by parents
of young children; and how to reach out and work with
ethnic communities in efforts to increase appropriate
antibiotic use.
A highlight of the plenary was a video presentation
showing interviews with ethnic media leaders in California.
The video conveyed their understanding of the importance
of antibiotic use in their community and the role
they feel ethnic media can play as a partner in education
and awareness campaigns.
