The SBRHA has
taken the lead among MediCal managed care plans in California
on the issue of appropriate antibiotic prescribing and
antibiotic resistance. They sponsored the Central Coast
Media Training in 2000, have been an active partner
to establish a statewide data collection system for
appropriate antibiotic prescribing, and have hosted
physician and consumer focus groups. Through their partnership,
AWARE has developed English and Spanish language materials
that are culturally sensitive, utilizing health literacy
principles to ensure these materials will be understood
within underserved communities. SBRHA staff serves on
the steering committee and data and consumer education
work groups. |

CPhA is an AWARE founding member. They have enabled
AWARE to reach over 2 million consumers with their Antibiotic
Awareness Week Bag Stuffer program, been active in media
efforts to raise awareness about appropriate antibiotic
use and have been a key member of the team to organize
the AWARE speaker's bureau. Pharmacists have been media
spokespersons and will be community presenters as well.
CPhA is involved in the efforts to develop clinical
resources for appropriate antibiotic prescribing. CPhA
was represented at our national conference and are now
helping other state pharmacy associations to become
active partners in efforts to reduce antibiotic resistance.
CPhA staff serve on AWARE's steering committee, executive
committee, consumer education, media and clinical practice
work groups. |

Health Plan Award - Kaiser Permanente

Kaiser Permanente is an AWARE founding member. They
were part of our 1999 statewide convening and actively
encouraged all present to become involved in this statewide
effort. Through their leadership, a statewide surveillance
system exists to track strep pneumoniae resistant bacteria;
a system that did not exist before in California. They
have been active in media efforts since 2000 with many
Kaiser Permanente physicians serving as media spokespersons
statewide. And, their efforts lead to the 48 Hours television
segment in 2002. They have issued joint communications
to physicians about appropriate prescribing and been
leaders in the development of AWARE's clinical practice
component. Kaiser Permanente pharmacists have provided
leadership in the effort to develop a statewide data
collection system to track appropriate antibiotic prescribing. |

Blue Shield
of CA is an AWARE founding member. Through their partnership,
AWARE trained over 115 media spokespersons giving rise
to the most successful antibiotic resistance media campaign
nationwide. Their partnership launched our pharmacy
bag stuffer program and our PSA campaign featuring Bill
Nye, 'the Science Guy and Dick Van Dyke. Blue Shield
of CA is a leader in the AWARE efforts to develop a
statewide quality improvement process to track antibiotic
prescribing. Blue Shield of CA also disseminated joint
communication to their members with the AWARE Project
about appropriate antibiotic use and has been active
in the development of the AWARE clinical practice component.
They provided leadership to create the AWARE website
- www.aware.md. Blue Shield of CA staff have served
on AWARE's steering committee, executive committee,
consumer education, data management and clinical practice
work groups. In 2002, they received the national Best
of the Blues Award for their partnership with the CMA
Foundation in the AWARE Project. |
