Aware Awards

Individual Award - Bill Nye the Science Guy
Bill Nye has been a friend to the CMA Foundation's AWARE Project since our kick-off event on the steps of the California State Capitol in the fall of 2000.

Mr. Nye, recognized nationally for his ability to educate parents and children on even the most complex scientific topics, helped AWARE launch its media campaign that resulted in an NBC National News story and news stories on television stations throughout California. The kick-off event even aired on all national United Airlines in-flight broadcasts during the 2000/2001 cold and flu season.
Bill Nye

The support of the Emmy-Award winning science show host did not stop there. In 2001, AWARE again approached Mr. Nye and asked if we could feature him in radio and television public service announcements. Asking for nothing in return, Mr. Nye flew to Sacramento and taped two television PSAs. The California Broadcasters Association later informed us they had never seen spots played more often and for a longer period of time than those featuring Mr. Nye.

As if that weren't enough, we approached Mr. Nye a third time to involve him in a poster campaign AWARE will launch in 2003. Again, Mr. Nye gave his time to the effort, which will result in three posters for use throughout California and the country in school nurses offices, childcare settings, school classrooms, and physician offices.

Over the past three years, Mr. Nye has helped make a very complex scientific issue one everyone can understand.

  Individual Award - Cindy Lin
Cindy developed a hand washing 3rd grade curriculum entitled - Wash The Germs Away! She sought and received Strauss Foundation funding from Stanford University to support her efforts. Cindy also developed a program to train college and medical students to present the program. As a result of our national conference, Cindy's curriculum has been distributed to over 18 states and is being used in many communities in California.

  Consumer Award - California PTA
The CAPTA is a founding member of AWARE, enabling the project to communicate with PTA members throughout California. We have developed annual Antibiotic Awareness Week Campaign Kits. In 2001, the CAPTA adopted a resolution identifying the growing resistance to antibiotics as one of their top child health concerns. They have been active members in the development of AWARE's speaker's bureau and consumer education materials. They are a leader nationally in the effort to engage consumers in this critical public health issue. CAPTA members serve on the AWARE steering committee, executive committee and consumer education work group.

  Consumer Award - SMART Coalition
The SMART Coalition is dedicated to helping seniors manage their medications correctly. Retired pharmacists and nurses provide this training. In 2001, the SMART Coalition incorporated the AWARE messages into their training. They have helped the AWARE Project reach out to seniors through their community education programs and helped the Aware Project to develop our statewide speaker's bureau.
